The 1980s was the decade of commercialism. It was all about sales and consumption in so many industries — especially entertainment. Any Generation Xer (and even some older Millennials) will remember how successful the toy lines of the 1980s were.
It started with Kenner's Star Wars toy line as 1979 flipped to 1980. Then He-Man and the Masters of the Universe came, along with the resized and reimagined G.I. Joe line. Transformers came from Japan by storm shortly after. Then came dozens upon dozens upon dozens of other toy lines, looking to match the success of those toy line monsters — or, at the very least, jump onto the toy line bandwagon to get at least a small piece of the pie.
Here we celebrate those toy lines (the memorable, forgettable, and everything in between) by sharing a master list of 1980s toy lines.
You’ll surely recognize many of these. Others you won’t have seen since you were a kid, triggering that ultimate nostalgia drip. And there will also be many that have you asking, “Wait, that was a thing?”
So sit back, step away from the scrolling through Tik Tok and Instagram, and journey back to a simpler and more magical time as we remember the toy lines from the 1980s.
